New York - Day 1 - Arrival and First Impressions

After a good night's sleep and breakfast at the hotel in Reykjavik, we headed to the airport. The car rental return went smoothly for us as scratches and dents from the countless potholes and gravel roads went unnoticed. Lucky us! At the airport, we checked in and waited for the flight to depart.
At 6:45 PM, after a 6-hour flight, we landed in New York. After going through the Immigration Center, we wanted to find a taxi outside of JFK Airport. Right at the airport door, we were approached by a 'trustworthy' man asking if we needed a taxi. In our youthful innocence, we agreed and followed him to the parking garage (that should have been a red flag). After a 30-minute ride in a Lincoln Navigator, we arrived at the hotel and it was time to pay the taxi fare. The 'nice' man demanded a measly 189 dollars (about 170 euros)... being 2 meters tall, black, and surely armed, we had no choice but to pay...
Although we only had a small hotel room with bunk beds (about 8 m²), we were right in Manhattan. After unpacking and catching our breath, we ventured out at 9 PM to explore New York and then fell into bed, exhausted.
