Why travel with a caravan...

I am often asked why I bother to trundle along at 80 km/h...

FIRSTLY, I usually drive faster, I know, that's not so great!

SECONDLY, I have everything I need with me.

THIRDLY, I can fit through almost all barriers with the towing vehicle.

FOURTHLY, I like to travel in this way!

I've been a camper since I was little.

It started as a baby and child in my parents' caravan, then we switched to the tent, but it had a few shortcomings.

Christian and I once drowned in Greece with the tent and had a storm ditch flowing through the tent....

At first, I had a caravan with my siblings, but then our caravan came up for sale on eBay. It was a bargain because the Jet had an accident damage. It was bought as a spare parts warehouse, but it was quickly converted into a second caravan and the damage was repaired.

Since the lady at the registration office could never pronounce the name of the previous owner correctly, Jet 2 quickly became Palumbi. The name stuck and has been with us since 2005 as a loyal companion.

Palumbi is a Jet Knaus built in 1972 with twin tires and therefore an extremely good roadholding. (He needs it too when I'm dragging at an average of 110, which is allowed in Belgium.... Sometimes I don't look at the speedometer...)

After being repaired, the Jet first started in Alsace and shortly afterwards at Lake Iseo.

Christian didn't know caravans as a concept for so long, but as a good architect and craftsman, he is completely dedicated to preserving our vehicle! Vintage caravan means that after a bumpy road, you sometimes find screws and then you have to find out where they came from.

Some time ago we as summer campers decided that we no longer need the gas heater - the year 2016 showed us that we should not see it that way, because in Scotland, Wales and generally in the north, the seasons are not comparable to the south! Here you need a heater, but the amperage of the campsite should not be exceeded!!!!!

After that, Palumbi was equipped with a Truma and a solar system. The solar system allows us to charge our devices with it when there is enough sun. This does not include the refrigerator, but now we could stand autonomously with the help of the gas bottles, which is a great advantage in Scotland.

We occasionally stand autonomously, but a campsite for showers and toilets is not bad!

The heater is wonderful when it is wet and/or cold outside, of course, it also needs to be professionally serviced. We do this with the TÜV every two years, as well as the chassis.

It's worth it, because even if camping prices have been rising more and more in recent years, especially in the south, the caravan is still a cheaper alternative for us.

H.Hennig
