Day 7: From Tin Can Bay to Town 1770

પ્રકાશિત: 08.07.2024

Our alarm clock rang at 6 a.m. today. The kids thought it was too early, but we wanted to be punctual at Barnacles Dolphine Center at 7 a.m. As it started raining again shortly after getting up, we decided to drive instead of walking.

At the Dolphine Center, it was explained in detail that the dolphins there are Australian Humpback Dolphins living in the bay. There are approximately 80 dolphins, with a maximum of 10 coming by every morning, where they can be fed by tourists under the supervision of volunteers.

Today there were 6 adult dolphins and a two-year-old calf. Each of the kids received a fish to feed to one of the dolphins.

Afterwards, we quickly drove back to the campsite to pay for our stay. The campground host was not there last night. Then we headed towards Maryborough. The small town still has several historic buildings, but we just drove through.
Maryborough
Our drive took us through macadamia plantations and sugar cane fields. The road was quite bumpy in some places with many potholes, making the dishes in the back rattling.
The first stop was at Bagara Beach. Although the sun was out by now, it was quite windy with very high waves. Therefore, we skipped swimming and just had a picnic lunch break.
We then headed to Bundaberg, where we had tickets for a tour of the rum distillery at 1 p.m. During the one-hour tour, we were explained how rum is made from sugar cane, specifically from molasses with the addition of yeast and water.

Unfortunately, due to the risk of explosion from sparks, we had to surrender all electronic devices, including the camera, before entering the factory premises. Therefore, there are no photos from the tour itself.

The tour ended at the bar, where we could taste the various rums and liqueurs of the distillery.

After completing the necessary grocery shopping, we still had about 125 km left to Town 1770, our destination for today. We probably wouldn't reach it until after sunset. We just made it to the campground with the last daylight. Since it was dry, we could spend the evening in front of the camper.

For the statistics:

Driven: 351 km
