Spent the last few days in standby mode. Went for walks often, enjoyed the sun, watched the kite surfers, or sometimes got on each other's nerves 😏. I've been enjoying listening to audiobooks and looking out at the sea. Something new for me.
Since we also had to refill water today and wanted to visit Uncle Lidl, we didn't arrive in Rethymnon until around 4:00 pm. Nevertheless, I still wanted to take a look at the nice little town. It is the third largest city in Crete and has been spared from earthquakes so far. It has preserved a mix of eastern mysticism and western grandeur. During the time of Turkish rule, several houses and churches were converted into mosques. I passed by the Venetian fountain in the old town, where the citizens used to get water. I strolled through the narrow streets. People are still sitting outside taverns or cafes. On the way back, I walked along a beach promenade lined with tall palm trees. Passing by, I saw the Venetian harbor before I passed by the 16th century fortress and finally arrived back at the campsite.
