Sado - Museum in the old school building

उजवाडाक आयलां: 15.05.2023

Today we are going to a museum and helping the owner clean and organize the sales area. The museum is located in an old school that had to close because there were no longer enough students. In Sado, there are many such abandoned schools, and the only ones still open are in the 'bigger cities' that still feel almost like abandoned villages. The museum has many old things from the history of the island, such as tools for craftsmen and rice farmers, drawings and photographs of the surroundings, and cultural objects. When gold was found on the island, people from all over Japan came to the island, which has resulted in the culture on Sado being very diverse and influenced by many different things. The sales area is as dusty as the rest of the museum, but at least there we want to create a little bit of order. The founder of the museum makes wooden toys and small clay figures himself, paints them, and then sells them. We sort the small figures and wipe all the shelves, and we also decorate the bookshelf with the photo albums so that everything looks a little neater. With our packed lunch, we each get a homemade bamboo shoot in a sauce, and I think it's one of the best things I've ever eaten. When we are done, we play with the bamboo toys for a while, and even though we can't really communicate with the older man because we don't speak the same language, we still understand each other quite well without words. As a thank you, we each get to take one of his clay figures with us, and I'm sure the little Kappa I chose will feel at home on my bookshelf. On the way back, we stop briefly at another donut shop, owned by the student of the owner of the shop we visited yesterday. They have almost the same donuts, but they come in a cute Toki paper bag. (Toki are the pink ibises that only live on Sado)
