Now that the beautiful meadow flowers on the campsite are being loudly picked away, we quickly leave the campsite and head for Monsanto, i.e. a hikers' car park at a small chapel nearby. The path there is incredibly narrow. Fortunately, no one is coming towards us. In fact, there is a huge French motorhome parked in the hikers' car park...
A beautiful hiking trail takes us through granite rocks up to Monsanto, which won the prize for being the “most Portuguese village in Portugal” in 1938. Many of the houses have been completely renovated; “House of the Dragons” was partly filmed here. We are impressed by the castle and the village, drink a Galao and then we are supposed to go to the Freixial campsite. However, it had just been made suitable for summer and was therefore closed. So we drive on to Penamacor and end up above the village at the newly built sports hall with a wonderful view of the mountains. Here we are completely alone and undisturbed. We eat in the restaurant la Cave, where the people of Penamacor also meet. Delicious!
