1,000 steps through Goslar

1,000 steps through Goslar

We signed up for the city tour with this title at short notice. It was definitely worth it. Even in the unlikely event that someone could read everything that has ever been written about Goslar, the participants' questions could never be answered as comprehensively as by our tour guide. No question was left unanswered. She also always paid attention to the time so that we could go to the council chamber or the homage hall, for example. What we got to see was impressive. It was definitely more than the advertised 1,000 steps through the history of Goslar; but every step was worth it. Even if a lot of it can be found on the Internet, the ten euros was definitely worth it for us.

It would go beyond the scope of this page to go into all the things that were explained to us. Not to mention the many beautiful stories. Whether it is about the Siemens family and their impressive house, or the Imperial Palace or the hotel on the market called KAISERWORTH - these are touching stories. The term WORTH, for example, refers to a natural elevation in a valley. The building standing on it is not easily reached by the water or even washed away. On the North Frisian Islands, such elevations are called WARFTEN.

The two hours flew by. The history of mining was also covered.

There are also additional guided tours.
After these very informative hours, we went in search of a good espresso. We found one at the SCHUHHOF. This small square was once the center of the shoemaker's guild and is now a popular meeting place. We found what we were looking for at the EISCAFE VENEZIA and enjoyed a tiramisu cake. Both were filling and stimulated the circulation, preparing us for the onward journey to Quedlinburg.

This is also a beautiful place with half-timbered houses in varying degrees of preservation. It is not just a lack of money that is the reason why these are not renovated. Often there is an unclear ownership situation. After all, this town has UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE status. And rightly so. Lots of small shops on the ground floor are tempting - unfortunately the upper floors often look empty. Where do the people who work here live? I was unable to find out in the short time I had.

We set off again to find a place to stay for the night in Schöningen. The journey is the destination - that's true here too. And the rain that started to fall wasn't as bad as we had feared.

There are eight free parking spaces on the grounds of the local swimming pool. One of them, under old linden trees, offered us space for one night. So that the kitchen could stay cold today, we made our way down the valley and into the town. On a Monday, the local restaurants also have a well-deserved break. At LIKE GRANDMA'S KITCHEN we not only got a seat and delicious WOLTERS BEER (from here) but also an exceptionally good dinner. A great waitress, who also found time to answer questions about the dishes, rounded off the evening meal.

Unfortunately, it was still raining lightly when we set off uphill to burn off some calories. Now we're hoping for a quiet night under the linden trees.

See you soon
