Fascinating landscapes, glaciers, and ice...

Publicado: 26.05.2018

On the 23rd of May, we left our hostel in Kirkjubæjarklaustur and drove along the dark black sands of the Vatnajökull volcano. The view during the drive was magnificent. Huge rock walls rose up and there were cracks everywhere with small or larger waterfalls. On the other side, there were large meadows with green grass and sheep or horses. Most of the time, there was a mother sheep and two sheep kids. Sometimes, it even happened that one lamb was black and the other was white. Funny and really cute. They cuddle all the time or play in the grass. It was wonderful. Occasionally, colorful wooden houses stood in the middle of the meadow in front of these mighty mountain or volcano walls. Sometimes we stopped or got out to take a closer look or take photos. Usually, you can just stop where one or two cars are already parked. Our first stop was the Skaftajökull glacier. It required a 45-minute hike to reach the glacier, but the weather was on our side. It wasn't raining and the sun even occasionally shone. When we arrived at the glacier, it looked like the moon. Black crumbly rock everywhere and then the glacier and the lake in front of it. Many ice plates had broken off and had beautiful colors. Unfortunately, by the year 2200, Iceland as it is now will no longer exist. Almost all the ice will have melted and Iceland will probably have to come up with a new name. After we walked back, we refreshed ourselves with a delicious soup and a sandwich and then continued to a lagoon with black, white, and blue ice blocks. It was beautiful there, just very, very windy, as there was a beach with black sand and ice blocks directly across. They were lying on the shore. Everything in Iceland is just so different. You can only truly understand it once you've been there. We then had hot chocolate and coffee and bought some groceries for dinner. After that, we drove to our accommodation in Djupivogur. It was again in the middle of nowhere in front of a mountain wall from which a waterfall springs. We had a whole house to ourselves and even a friendly four-legged visitor. Naima immediately connected with the dog and he actually listened to her. We cooked salmon with potatoes and had a nice evening.
