Thursday 12th March.
We left Ingeniero Juarez at 7 o'clock. After crossing the border, we headed up into the Bolivian mountains. The higher we went, the cooler it got, and we were finally out of that unbearable heat. The journey was fantastic. This is the South America I had imagined. Before reaching Tarija, we reached the highest point in the mountains at about 2300 meters. Tarija is located at about 1800 meters. However, we had to be very careful not to run over any pets here. Everything is running around on the street, cows, horses, goats, pigs, everything. We also saw a shepherd running in haste before a bend, and behind the bend, the reason for his haste, a runaway cow with a rope around its neck, running away. In the evening, we all went out to eat together. Tomorrow we will drive to the largest salt flat on earth, the Salar de Uyuni. This is located at about 3500 meters.
