#61 On the trail of Picasso

January 26-27, 2022: Málaga

Our travel guide writes about Málaga: If you don't have time for Granada, Málaga is a great alternative. This statement surely comes from the fact that Málaga, like Granada, has a citadel built by the Muslim sultans in the Middle Ages. However, as we quickly discovered, the palace complex in Málaga is in much worse condition and smaller than the one in Granada. This could be due to the fact that Málaga was politically weaker than Granada at that time, and also because Napoleon, in the 19th century, had large parts of the complex blown up during his retreat. Nevertheless, the unmistakable beautiful Muslim architecture of that time is still visible here, and there is also a spectacular view over the whole city of Málaga.

In addition to the large castle complex, Málaga also has a beautiful cathedral that was unfortunately never completed. For example, one of the bell towers is missing, and the roof does not seem to be completely watertight, as the gable roof was never built. Inside, one is overwhelmed by the beauty and power of the works of art, as in many cathedrals.

The city center with all its small shopping alleys is also very beautiful, so we simply walked around aimlessly in Málaga to soak up the atmosphere of this city. What definitely contributes to the atmosphere of this city are the countless restaurants that have outdoor seating areas in the already narrow streets. So we strolled through various outdoor seating areas of different restaurants and along many small shops, enjoying the sunny but somewhat windy weather.

The next day, the Picasso Museum was on the agenda. He was born here in Málaga and has created over 50,000 paintings, sculptures, sketches, or other works of art since he was nine years old. An absolute workaholic among artists. What was also new to me is that he was already celebrated as a pop star in the art scene even during his lifetime. The museum in Málaga tries to bring the visitor closer to the multitude of different art directions and painting styles that Picasso went through in his long life. Even though I absolutely cannot appreciate Picasso's abstract phase, the visit to the museum was very enriching for me.

We now have 6,666 km on the odometer, so we decided on the spot to at least remove the heavy dirt in a car wash. The last few days we had a little more wind, so on the last beach parking lot our entire van was first wetted by the spray of the sea and then powdered by the dusty sand parking lot. Although we had a little rain in Málaga in the morning (only the 3rd time on our trip since October), it was so little that the streets did not get wet properly and therefore not enough to clean our van again.
