And it rained for hours at night, extremely heavy after midnight, accompanied by dazzling lightning. There was no sleep to be had, but we stayed dry.
Today's short distance: Le Rosier (1378 m) - La Vachette - Briançon (1290 m)
We are only walking for about two hours in total. We arrive at the hotel around 11 am, after a coffee break in La Vachette.
The old town of Briançon with its fortifications is a work by Vauban, built at the end of the 17th century on the orders of Louis XIV as protection against the Savoyards, we read. Military historians will find the place very interesting; we are not. However, strolling through the narrow streets of the small old town is quite beautiful. There are a lot of tourists, especially French and Italians, and according to the car license plates, a few Dutch as well. During dinner at our hotel, we meet a Swiss couple of our age who are also hiking on the GR 5; maybe we will meet them again in the coming days. However, they are going to Nice later, while we are going to Menton.
Tomorrow, Friday, we will head back to the mountains, to the Col des Ayes at an altitude of 2477 m, and then back down, and that's how it will be for the next few days. The weather forecast looks pretty good for a whole week.

Wir im Osten gönnen den Mosers die verdiente Erholungsphase in Briançon! Hier kann sich unser Ignaz seiner Freude über tolle Befestigungen ganz hingeben. Auch gönnen wir ihm, wieder mal Schweizer zu treffen. Auch wünschen wir den Wandertoristen aus 4543 genug Wasser, denn zuviel Weisswein treibt Ignaz zu stark an!
