BLOG 20 / Lago Argentino & Gletscher und weiter nach Süden / Largo Argentino & Glaciers und weiter südlich

Wir bleiben in Argentinien und im Nationalpark Los Glaciares, besuchen jetzt aber den südlichen Teil. El Calafate ist auch nur ein touristischer Stützpunkt – es zieht uns rasch zum Perito Moreno Gletscher, der wirklich sehenswert und beeindruckend ist. Die Abbruchwand ist bis zu 70 Meter hoch. Zudem ist er der einzige jetzt noch wachsende Gletscher.

Nach einer sturmdurchtosten Nacht (wir parken direkt an der Hafenmole, weil das Schiff am nächsten Morgen bereits um 8.30 Uhr zur Gletschercruise startet). Bei der Anfahrt zum Spegazzini Gletscher passieren wir die „Kondorwand“ und haben Glück, einen Kondor wohl am Nest aus relativer Nähe zu sehen (ein langes Teleobjektiv ist allerdings hilfreich). Der Spegazzini ist noch gewaltiger – seine Abbruchkante soll bis 120 m hoch sein. Beeindruckende Ansichten!

Im See schwimmen Eisberge verschiedener Größe und Formen, Fotomotive ohne Ende! Beim Upsala Gletscher muss das Schiff recht weit weg bleiben, es hat vor einigen Jahren wohl Probleme gegeben, als ein extrem großes Eisstück abgebrochen war.

Voll mit tollen Eindrücken bleiben wir über Nacht bei der nahen Estancia Rio Mitre – in Reiseführern nicht wegen der Campingmöglichkeit, sondern wegen des rustikalen Restaurants gerühmt. Die Speisenauswahl ist einfach – „Simply beef is ok?“ – Ja, und es war super, wir haben selten ein so gutes Steak gegessen.

Am nächsten Tag geht es wieder zurück zur Ruta 40 – zur Abwechslung wieder mal über fast 100 km eigentlich langweilige Schotterpiste durch die Pampa – die vielen Löcher erfordern aber hohe Aufmerksamkeit beim Fahren. Abwechslung bietet die Tierwelt – wir sehen halbwilde Pferde, den kleinen Pampafuchs, diverse Greifvögel, eine Nandufamilie, Flamingos in einem wohl salzigen Tümpel mitten in der Pampa und natürlich wieder Guanakos.

We stay in Argentina and in National Park Los Glaciares, but now the southern part. El Calafate is also just a tourist village – so we head towards Perito Moreno Glacier – really worth visiting and impressive. The glacier wall has a height of up to 70 meters. Perito Moreno is the only growing glacier in the region nowadays.

After a stormy night (we park directly at the pier since departure time of the ship is already 8.30 am the next morning). Cruising towards Spegazzini Glacier we pass the “Wall of Condors” and are lucky to see a Condor sitting in his nest relatively close (a tele lens is quite helpful).

The Spegazzini is even more massive – height at the edge up to 120 meters, impressive views!

Several bigger and smaller icebergs of various shapes are swimming in the lake – image motifs without limits. The ship must stay away from the Uppsala Glacier – some years ago there were troubles after the crack off of a huge iceberg.

Fullof new impressions we stay overnight at the Estancia Rio Mitre close by. Guides are not praising the campground but the rustic restaurant said to be simple but excellent. True! The choice was easy “Simply beef is ok?” – and the steak was excellent, one of the best we ever had.

Next day back to Ruta 40 and again gravel track for around 100 km – in principle a little boring to drive through flat pampa, but you need to be very cautious due to the many potholes. Nature brings some entertainment – we can watch semi-wild horse, small pampa foxes, various birds of prey, a family of rheas, suddenly flamingos in a small salty pond in the middle of nowhere and naturally also Guanacos.
