Tybee Island

Foillsichte: 27.09.2022

Despite our advanced age, we had once again wonderfully survived the alcohol intake from the day before. Our destination today was Tybee Island, about 40 minutes away from our accommodation in Savannah. Bridges quickly take you to the island and along the way you always have beautiful views of the marshland.

On the way there, things got a little historic, because we made a detour to Fort Pulaski, named after a Polish general and hero of the American Revolutionary War. He is also considered the 'father of the American cavalry.' The construction of the fort was completed in 1847 after 18 years. In the Civil War (1861-1865), it was initially occupied by Confederate troops (Southern states) before it capitulated to the Union troops (Northern states) due to their more modern cannons. We were lucky that we could visit the fort for free on this day (usually $10 admission) and that we witnessed the firing of 2 cannons at 11 o'clock in the morning.

We continued as planned to Tybee Island. We had specially ordered warm weather for this day (okay, Steffi had ordered it...).

First, we headed to North Beach. We reached the beach via a wooden boardwalk, which attracted not only sun worshipers and bathing beauties due to its enormous length and width, but also a variety of anglers. This was particularly exciting to watch for Stefan.

We then headed to the south of the island. Here, we strolled along the Tybee Beach Pier. Unfortunately, shark fishing was prohibited, so Stefan no longer felt like fishing.

Afterwards, Steffi finally got to dive into the waves. The water was super warm, you just had to watch out not to be knocked over by the waves.

After the sun had set and bathed the beach in pastel tones, we made our way back to Savannah. By chance, an acrobatics show was taking place on the Riverfront, so we ended our day in Savannah with a lot of spectacle.

Savannah is an absolute party city. Drinking alcohol on the street is allowed everywhere in the Historic District. All bars also offer drinks to go. However, the festivities do not get out of hand.

Greetings

Steffi and Stefan
