March 25, 2022: Torre dell'Orso, Lago di Bauxite, Lecce
F. We continue through southern Apulia. In addition to beautiful beaches, the coast of the heel of Italy also has many steep cliffs that have been hollowed out into caves. One of the most famous is the Grotta della Poesia near Torre dell'Orso. There is also a larger archaeological site of an ancient city from the 16th/17th century BC. Since we are currently in the low season, this site was not yet open, but there was almost no one else there, so we practically had the Grotta della Poesia to ourselves.
Another recommendation from the Italians on the ferry was Lago di Bauxite, which is a pond in an old bauxite mine. The rugged red cliffs did not dirty the water in the pond, so the water here was beautifully blue as well. This beautiful intensity of colors in nature was admired not only by a few tourists but also used as a photoshoot location when we were there. It is always fascinating how much staff it takes to take professional photos.
In the afternoon, after the two natural sights, we went to Lecce. This is a small beautiful Italian city with many Baroque buildings. The cathedral of the city is particularly beautiful here. There is also a small amphitheater, but it is by no means as large and well-preserved as the one in Rome.
Day 161 - Total tour 12,169 km
