Caribbean here we come!

Foillsichte: 17.03.2018

With a Cessna that can accommodate only about 30 people, we fly from Managua to the Corn Islands! I have a lot of respect for such a small plane. But what wouldn't we do to visit these dream islands. First, we order a beer on the plane and then it's no problem at all. Even our visitor from Germany is holding up well, we are proud of you Sarah! After what feels like 15 minutes (1 1/2 hours), the four of us land on Big Corn. The 'Islas de Maiz' are only 80 and 90 km away from the mainland, yet far away from any stress. The people here speak a mix of Spanish and English with a Creole dialect. At first, it confuses us a lot and our limited knowledge of Spanish does not help us now. But oh well, most people speak clear English and there are plenty of taxis that can take you from A to B for 20 Cordoba (70 cents), so it's easy to get around. You can also explore the island by bike, scooter, or golf cart. We often just walked to explore the island. We walked from Long Beach along a wide path, which then splits into trails and leads to Bluff Point, and later to Picnic Beach at the southern end. Unfortunately, we missed the turnoff for Bluff Point, but the beach after that was just right for us. After the effort, we treat ourselves to a coconut and since the weather wasn't so great until then, we enjoy the sun on our bodies and refresh ourselves in the sea. The water here is exactly what you would expect in the Caribbean, crystal clear, and when the sun shines on it, it glows in all shades of turquoise. The northern tip (North End) is more rocky and good for snorkeling and diving. In South End, it is good for swimming because there are fewer reefs and algae on the beaches. So hop on a bike or whatever you prefer, and explore the island! And don't forget to visit the island bakery under any circumstances :) Have fun!

Hotel recommendation: Coconut Palm Residency, located right next to the bakery. The accommodation cannot be found on booking.com, very nice family, and the accommodation is available at a cheap price.

Tip: Before planning a trip to the Corn Islands, check the weather forecast. It can often be stormy and rainy on the Corni's. Apart from the lack of Caribbean feeling, it is then difficult or even impossible to cross over to Little Corn.
