Today we got up at 5 a.m. because we had booked the 8:10 a.m. ride on the Banff Gondola and had to have breakfast and check out beforehand.
There are also advantages to being out so early. The parking lot was almost empty and there were only a few people around. From the top we had a great view of Banff and the surrounding area. We could even see Tunnel Mountain, where we had been yesterday. Then we walked along well-paved wooden paths and steps to the summit. We saw a mountain goat and again lots of chipmunks, which were quite tame and darted around between the people. The girls were able to collect stamps in their Explorer Passport in the Discovery Center.
Then we went to Jasper via the Icefield Parkway. It was supposed to be a 3.5 hour drive, but it took us about 6 hours because of the many photo stops. The landscape was indescribable. We passed blue lakes like Bow Lake or Peyto Lake, surrounded by mountains and glaciers. We even saw remnants of snow in the forest near Peyto Lake. Only the girls wanted to finally get to the hotel and kept asking why we were stopping again.
Our accommodation for the next while is the Chateau Jasper.
Since we arrived late, we had wrapped pork for dinner in a restaurant. Very tasty :-)
