Since there was only one beach in the southern part of the island that we could reach on foot, we decided to rent a scooter to see the rest of the island.
However, on the way to the scooter rental in the morning, we became more and more unsure because neither of us had ever really driven a scooter before. The rental company made us even more panicked and advised us to take a test drive first. After Annika and I had decided who would start, I slowly started driving.. turned at the end of the road and of course drove back on the wrong side (left-hand traffic). The Thai's feedback was surprisingly positive. I just had to practice a little beforehand.
And then Annika came... Anni started driving... Unfortunately, she was a bit too slow due to fear, so it looked a bit wobbly. When she tried to turn at the end of the road, however, she underestimated the gas and raced straight across the street into a small stall. I could barely hold myself from laughing and looked at the Thai, who thankfully was no longer there, but rummaging around. Anni came back even more wobbly, also on the wrong side and somewhat disturbed.
So we decided to rent only one scooter. I drove around for an hour and tried the hills until I felt confident enough to ride with Annika.
On this day, we saw monkeys 🐒 for the first time. However, they were quite cheeky and had absolutely no fear of humans. When one of them sat on our scooter and I slowly approached him so he would jump under it, he hissed at me, came towards me, and even jumped at me.
That's when we decided that monkeys were stupid and drove to another beach (Lonely Beach). In retrospect, this beach was our favorite.
In the evening, we went back to the bar and met Stephan, a 30-year-old who had been traveling through Cambodia and Thailand for a few weeks.
We decided to go to one of the waterfalls with him the next day.
