Chefchaouen is worth a visit not only because of its beautiful Medina. Because it is located in the middle of the Rif Mountains, it is perfect for hiking trips. A popular tour is to the Akchour Waterfalls.
After mint tea (actually black tea with fresh mint) and breakfast, we drove about 40 minutes to the starting point of the hike. From there, we walked for 2.5 hours. Up and down the mountain, through rough terrain. Maybe I should have packed hiking shoes, but oh well. I didn't have time to think about my shoes while marveling at the landscape.
I've been trying to make sense of Morocco the whole time, but it's so different from what I've seen before. And although I'm on the African continent, it is anything but Africa here.
The Rif Mountains, on the way to the waterfall, are really beautiful! Gray-red rocks, blue sky, everything is green and most of the time we have the river next to us. Sometimes we walk through forests, sometimes along the cliff, over meadows and several times through the river. A dog accompanies us the whole time, we also see monkeys in between, and there is birdsong everywhere. The effort was definitely worth it. On the way back, we only need two more hours.
In the evening, we watch the sunset from a rooftop terrace in Chefchaouen. Three days in Morocco and three days with completely different, perfect impressions.
