17.8. Dunnet Head and drive along the NW coast

Foilsithe: 17.08.2017

Reluctantly, we leave our abandoned overnight spot and make our way a few hundred yards to Dunnet Head due to the beautiful weather...from here we have a fantastic 360° panoramic view of the Orkney Islands and the Scottish mainland.

Then we set off on a longer route along the coast, first heading west and then south. Finally, we are in the Scotland that we expected with impressive mountains, green valleys, and dark blue lakes. Plus, the coastline with its striking cliffs. In the north, it is rather barren, but the further south we go, the greenery returns. So we spend the whole afternoon meandering along, making slow progress as we use only single track roads and stop at every opportunity for photography. And there are the sheep, constantly occupying the road.

By evening, we arrive in Ullapool and settle at the campsite due to a lack of alternatives. Ullapool is a fishing village with an almost Mediterranean atmosphere. Unfortunately, our hope for good seafood at the restaurant is once again dashed with breaded and overcooked scampi...at least the smoked salmon tastes good.
