Crete Day 14: May 17th - Elounda

Foilsithe: 22.03.2018

Unfortunately, today didn't start very well. I woke up in the early morning hours feeling nauseous and dizzy, and I didn't feel well at all today. So we stayed in bed a little longer than usual today, and at least for me, breakfast was out of the question. After lying down a bit more, I finally got out of bed so we could slowly start our day. The weather today looked rather changeable.

Market in Agios

First of all, we went to the market in Agios Nikolaos. There were supposed to be all sorts of things available for a low price. That was true, but unfortunately it was also very crowded. We didn't feel comfortable in the crowd, so we quickly left the market.

Elounda

Then we decided to go to Elounda and possibly take a boat to the island of Spinalonga, also known as 'the leper island.' That's where all the lepers were banished in the past. When we arrived in Elounda, we strolled through the town. Unfortunately, I still wasn't feeling very well, so we took it easy today.

It was said that Omalos, the sunken city, could be found in the bay of Elounda. The remains of the city were supposedly still visible underwater. The bay was very nice for walking, but the ruins of the city weren't very interesting.

We spent some time in the bay and enjoyed the weather, which was still good for now. However, dark clouds were gathering in the distance.

In the end, we didn't go to the leper island. We could tell that the peak season was slowly approaching because the small boats that took people to the island were quite full. So we decided against it.

Approaching Storm

We spent the evening in Agios Nikolaos again. Greek food was starting to get a bit tiresome, so we decided to have pizza tonight :D On the way back, we were unfortunately caught in a storm with heavy rainfall, so we arrived at the hotel completely drenched but somehow happy. I was feeling better too, so we watched the storm from the balcony :)

However, we hoped that the rain wouldn't continue. Tomorrow we had a trip planned to the Lassithi Plateau, and bad weather would not be desirable...
