We thought that we could drive to the penguins by car and then walk a bit. But we had to drive through sand, grass, mud, and puddles until it became too dangerous, especially since there was no one in front or behind us and no one to be seen anywhere. If we got stuck, who would pull us out on Christmas Eve? We had enough food and water, but spending a night in the car seemed less desirable to us, and who knows if someone would come on the 25th... So I stayed in the car with Lea, and Torben went with Ida and Mia to Estancia San Lorenzo, about 3km away, hoping to meet someone there or find the way to the penguins. It was kind of strange being alone in the car with Lea, knowing that no one would come and I couldn't get the car out, and no cell phone reception, not even radio... which, by the way, happened to us very often, you really need a satellite phone in Patagonia... but of course we didn't have one.
But it didn't take long for a big SUV to stop next to us, and Torben and the kids were inside, along with a ranger who wanted to take a penguin tour with us in the jeep. Let's go then! It was a great experience, on Christmas Eve, just with a ranger, in a huge penguin colony! We will remember this experience for a long time...
