#10 High, higher, Schauinsland...

Publisearre: 05.11.2021

October 27-28, 2021: Black Forest - Schauinsland

F. The best travel recommendations often come from people you meet during your journey. The mountain region Schauinsland was recommended to us by both locals and other travelers. So, after a day in Freiburg, we headed to the mountains in the evening. We left civilization behind, passing numerous campervans parked on the sides of the road or in driveways. The mountain became steeper and our small camper struggled to handle the gradient of up to 15%. Just before the end of the mountain stage, our low oil level warning light briefly illuminated. Confusion set in. What now? We didn't have any spare oil on board. According to the navigation system, we only had a few hundred meters to go until our destination. So, we continued driving and stopped at the next layby. Time to assess the situation. The engine was still running, all warning lights were off, and the temperature was normal. We had no cell phone reception, but the view of the sunset was breathtakingly beautiful. So beautiful, in fact, that people kept stopping in their cars to take photos. As we also noticed some faint exhaust fumes in the rearview mirror in the last curve, we decided not to continue and stayed overnight in the parking lot. The view couldn't get any better anyway. As Stefan once said to me, when faced with car trouble, don't panic and make yourself a cup of tea first. Instead of tea, we opened a bottle of beer and enjoyed our dinner in the sunset.

The next morning, I checked the oil level again and couldn't see any deviation from normal. Nevertheless, we made a note to buy oil on our next trip to the hardware store.

Just like the day before, there wasn't a cloud in the sky, so shortly afterwards we grabbed our hiking gear and hiked to Mount Schauinsland. After a few meters, we realized that the planned overnight spot 300 meters further had a significantly worse view of the landscape because it was on the other side of the mountain. We enjoyed the beautiful hike around the village of Hofsgrund and the gigantic 360° view from the observation tower on the summit of Schauinsland. We could even see the tops of the Alps.

For dinner, we were invited to Jenny's friend Fritz. But more about that in the next blog...
