"It never rains in Southern Nova Scotia"...
...who doesn't know this old Albert Hammond song from the seventies. Or was it Southern California where it never rains?
Either that, or Albert Hammond was never here.
Today, however, it poured buckets. We had such great plans for today: canoeing in Kejimkujik National Park, followed by whale-watching in the Bay of Fundy. But our innkeeper announced yesterday that it would rain today. And the weather apps we consulted all predicted a 90-100% chance of rain. So there was a 190% chance of getting wet.
Therefore, we quickly had to come up with an alternative plan. That plan was: after breakfast, go to the nearest town of Digby (a "town" with about 2,000 inhabitants), then visit Fort Anne in Annapolis Royal.
The breakfast was excellent, our host Kathy baked and made everything herself. Two other guests were sitting at the table with us, a mother and her adult daughter from St. Andrews in New Brunswick, Canada. We had a great conversation with them, then headed towards Digby in pouring rain. The visit to Digby was relatively short, as it was still pouring. We managed to take three photos, then had to take shelter in the car again.
We then got some cake from a German bakery (the bakers were from Saxony) in pouring rain, returned to our inn and consumed the valuable calories.
When the rain subsided a bit, we quickly petted the local cat...
...and off we went to Annapolis Royal to visit Fort Anne, including the fortifications.
The museum was very interesting. It said that 11,000 French soldiers failed to capture a fort held by 300 soldiers. And they're in NATO with us!?!?!?
They probably didn't have water with them, but red wine and pastis instead...
While we're on the subject of stereotypes: we talk to a lot of people here. Not because we're shamelessly approaching everyone, no, the people here are very friendly and open-minded and approach us when they realize we're not Canadian or American. And everyone has German ancestors, relatives or friends. And no one can pronounce the city where those ancestors/relatives/friends come from...
The weather forecast for tomorrow is dry weather and sunshine again. So we'll probably do the canoe tour tomorrow. We have plenty of water now...
