4th day "Rudi on Tour" Through the Dolomites

Publisearre: 12.06.2022

The view in the morning from the camper is just as great as in the evening.

At an altitude of 1,300 m it is still cold in the morning.

For breakfast we drive back to the parking lot in front of the pilgrimage chapel and have breakfast there.

Despite it being Saturday, it's still empty and heavenly quiet here.

At the bar we have an Italian coffee and use the very clean toilet facilities.

The next destination is Lake Carezza

The lake is located in the western Dolomites in the Latemar forest, about 20 kilometers southeast of Bolzano at  1520 m above sea level. The approximately 300 m long and 140 m wide lake is fed by underground sources from the Latemar mountain range. The depth and size of the lake depend on the season and weather, with the maximum depth being about 22 m. The small mountain lake is famous for its deep green water and the forest and mountain scenery above it.

We park in a parking lot where the parking ticket for 2 hours costs €10 for a motorhome and walk around the lake. It's incredible, this interplay of turquoise tones. Seems to be a photo opportunity for Instagram photos. People simply ignore all barriers. When we return to the parking meter, we pay €1 because there is no button for motorhomes.

We continue through the Dolomites via the Karapass, Passo di Giao and Passo Fedaia.

Endless switchbacks, cyclists, motorcyclists and rallies through the Alps. It's so crowded that we can't even stop at the top of the pass.

To be honest, I'm glad that Jürgen is driving, I don't really trust myself to handle all the climbs and curves.

We're riding the Giro d'Italia in the wrong direction and seeing all the markings on the road during the climbs. We're putting a lot of strain on the brake pads on the seemingly endless downhill journey. You have to be a little crazy to ride up here on a bicycle.

We take a coffee break at Lake Landro and realize that our bike carrier is crooked. We probably hit something when turning. So bikes off, bike carrier off, and reattach everything.

We continue to Sexten, always keeping an eye on the three peaks with an altitude of almost 3,000 m, which have been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. We believe that this is justified.

Here we find a parking lot and go shopping first. Mountain cheese, ham, "Vintschgau" bread, salami, things that we can't get at home.

In the wine bar in the village, we have another ham and cheese platter and drink Aperol for €4. The waiter gives us a tip on where we can park with the motorhome overnight.

So we park again. After a walk through the village, we return to the wine bar "Mühle" for another Aperol.

Here in the wine bar, a glass of wine costs €2 and the Aperol is €4...unthinkable in Cologne.

I think we will sleep well 😴
