30.01.2023 from Yarram to The Prom

Publisearre: 31.01.2023

In the morning, it has become a bit louder, the end of the school holidays is clearly noticeable with the vehicle traffic.

In the town of Yarram, the caution signs for the start of school are put up, just like with us. We're going to Wilsons Promontory National Park, abbreviated Wilsons Prom or simply the Prom. We wanted to be here a few days ago, but the holidays and the long weekend prevented us from being here earlier, so we visited some additional national parks and saw a lot. The Prom is one of the busiest and most remarkable national parks in the state of Victoria. The campground where we easily got a spot today on the first day of school, usually accommodates 500 campers, we can't even imagine the hustle and bustle on the hiking trails and on Mount Oberon. Today, we also couldn't find a spot in the parking lot for the hiking start on the mountain, so we just hiked through the bush, and this hike was quite challenging, quite steep uphill and downhill as well. We walked through a tunnel of vegetation, impenetrable, and also with the request not to leave the hiking trails, as the cinnamon fungus threatens to suppress and destroy native plants. 5.5 km in 90 minutes is an impressive hiking performance considering the differences in altitude, which we concluded with a swim in the unexpectedly cool sea. One would think Baltic Sea temperatures, and faster than thought, we are back outside, where bugs with huge trunks are just waiting to bother the saltwater-drenched swimmer. The park advertises with lots of wildlife, large grey giant kangaroos, emus, wombats, and pink parrots live here, let's see if anyone else shows up here at the campground. We are happy to be here and enjoy the evening.
