Invercargill

Publisearre: 24.01.2017

After having breakfast, packing up, and saying goodbye, we started our drive to Invercargill.

Our first stop along the way was Owaka, where we walked over to the bakehouse takeaway - I had fries (as usual).

Then we continued on to the Purakaunui Falls - amazingly impressive waterfalls, unfortunately the water was muddy and brown due to heavy rain in the past few days.

Our next stop was at Papatowai 'The Lost Gypsy Caravan' - very very cool. An old bus filled with interactive sculptures and other knick-knacks, all designed and created by Blair Anderson.

Along the way, we stopped at Florence Hill, which provided a fantastic view.

Afterwards, we stopped at Curio Bay - it was extremely windy (so much so that the wind pushed me back a few steps at times), but we saw a small cute wild penguin on the beach. The view from the top was also amazingly beautiful!

Before finally heading to Invercargill, we stopped at Slopepoint (the southernmost point of the South Island). Unfortunately, it was extremely windy here, to the point where even the car was shaking in the parking space, so I stayed in the car while Fritz ran like crazy to the lookout point, took some photos, and sprinted back.

Upon arrival in Invercargill, we went grocery shopping for pasta salad before checking into the hostel.

After the owner (a pretty old, nice, slim, and somewhat eccentric man) showed us around, we started cooking. The rest of the evening, we chatted with 2 guys from Trier and 2 other girls, and Fritz played Risk with the guys.

The next day, we drove to Bluff in the afternoon, the weather was terrible and the place was super ugly.

Usually, you can see Stewart Island and Antarctica in good weather - we couldn't even see the harbor because of the fog.

We spent another hour in the car at the beach, munching on apples and watching the huge waves.
