The Hamburg district of Blankenese is around 15 km downstream from the Elbe. You wouldn't believe how hilly Hamburg can be if you haven't walked through the staircase district yourself!
Blankenese is a former fishing village that belonged to Denmark until 1864. A walk through the staircase district on the slopes of the Elbe with its picturesque streets, winding stairs and houses close together is wonderful. There are also some small country houses and manor houses from the 18th and 19th centuries. Also interesting is the Art Nouveau “Beach Hotel”, from whose rooms you can see the Elbe.
From Blankenese we went back along the banks of the Elbe to the Elbe beach.
By the way, the old Swede is a large Ice Age boulder that was recovered from the Elbe, measuring 20 m in diameter and weighing 217 tons.
