Walking in Memphis

Julkaistu: 22.03.2017

Today on Monday we started in Nashville and drove to Memphis. It was a manageable distance and we quickly found a parking space at an Office Depot. That's actually not so easy with the long vehicles.

From there, it was only a few meters walk to the Sun Studios. The legendary recording studio where Elvis was discovered and Johnny Cash recorded some albums ... music history. By the way, we're already scratching 30 degrees Celsius, which is crazy since we had snow three days ago. Shorts are finally being put to use, yay...

Then onwards. We decided to skip Graceland because it takes up a lot of time and as my mom aptly said, 'I can't handle that much Elvis at once!' ;-) We just wanted to drive by and catch a glimpse of the estate. But that didn't work out either because our GPS led us in a different direction... well, no big deal.

And just like that, we were in Mississippi, the next state that was a premiere for us. After a short time, we could easily imagine the stories described by Mark Twain. A lot of rural life, houses that were partly old and seemingly abandoned, until we heard signs of life here and there. And the mighty Mississippi with its swampy banks everywhere you looked. Roads built on stilts. Once again, a completely different image of the USA. Our planned campground was supposed to be right by the river, but we had some difficulty finding it. Until we saw a sign for Isle of Capri. That's what it was called. However, what we found there was a large, modern hotel and casino complex that didn't remind us of RV parking spaces. The sun was already setting and Ute simply asked if we could stay. They were very cooperative, and it wouldn't be a problem for $16. Until we realized that there was an area in the parking lot that seemed to be specifically designated for this purpose. Electricity and water hookups, what more could we ask for. Perfect! On the other side of the river, Arkansas was waiting, and that's where we'll continue tomorrow...
