Today (20.09.21) we left Spain and headed back to France. We will be spending the next two days near Bordeaux. On our way there, we had about five hours of driving ahead of us, and Daniela planned two stops along the route.
I have to say, those roundabouts in Spain and France are so annoying. I told Daniela, 'If the GPS tells us to take the second exit in the roundabout one more time, I'm throwing it out the window.' There's a roundabout every 200 meters and the same dumb instruction over and over again. It's just straight ahead driving! :-()
The first stop was Sant Jean de Luz, a beautiful place with a charming harbor on the Atlantic. It was a cloudy day today, at least in the morning, so we first explored the historic city center, which we really liked. We found a tiny bakery that had special cream puffs. Daniela didn't want any, but I couldn't resist the offer of six of these little sweet treats. I only wanted one, but I ended up devouring the remaining five in no time. I had a sugar rush! Daniela was surprised when she saw the empty package. We then strolled along the promenade and wanted to let Littlefoot run on the beach. NO DOGS ALLOWED! Terrible - all year round. Hmmm, we walked to the end of the promenade and there was a small section of the beach for surfers, so I quickly went down there with Littlefoot. She had so much fun in the water and sand, it was adorable to watch.
Then came the second stop - the Dune du Pilat on the Atlantic coast near Arcachon, the highest sand dune in Europe! It was a fantastic highlight. Littlefoot had so much fun in the sand, she didn't want to be carried by us. She ran from left to right, from top to bottom, and kept digging like crazy. Daniela and I were amazed by the sight of the dunes and the surrounding landscape. We both plopped down in the sand on our jackets and enjoyed the view of the Atlantic. Suddenly, Littlefoot ran down the dune like she was on fire, and we thought she needed to relieve herself. Daniela ran after her with a bag. When Daniela caught up with her, Littlefoot turned around and came back to me just as quickly, then stretched out on Daniela's jacket. We both laughed - 'stood up, took my spot' ;-) Daniela had some fun in the dunes, too, and we ended up with sand everywhere. When we wanted to descend from the dunes, Littlefoot couldn't make it. She ended up being carried down by us.
Then we continued towards Bayle. This is where our accommodation is located, just outside of Bordeaux. We have come to love these privately-run small accommodations.
We are surrounded by vineyards here in Bayle. I have never seen so many vineyards and chateaus. When the sun was lower on the vineyards, you could already see the red-tipped leaves of the grapevines. It looked really beautiful, and we wondered what an Indian Summer would be like here...
