With the Mein Schiff 6 from New York to Jamaica - Before the trip

On 27.10.2017, our long-awaited dream trip from New York to Jamaica starts with our Lufthansa flight from Munich airport. The route on the Mein Schiff 6 from Tui Cruises led from New York to Norfolk, Norfolk, Port Canaveral, Miami, Nassau, St. Kitts, Antigua, Guadeloupe, La Romana, Ocho Rios to Montego Bay in Jamaica. 17 days and nights. Adventure at sea in our balcony cabin 8004.

We have seen and experienced a lot. A trip, a dream, memories, 3599 nautical miles for eternity.

If someone goes on a trip, he can tell a lot. And we could already tell a lot before our trip. Two names played an important role. Irma and Maria. No, they are not our new travel acquaintances or cabin mates, but the two category 5 hurricanes that swept through the Caribbean in September/October 2017 and loved the islands of Tortola, St Maarten, St Thomas, the Bahamas, the Dominican Republic and Miami just as much as we did. With wind speeds of up to 300 km/h, they swept through the Caribbean, leaving chaos and destruction behind on many islands.

It was not clear for a long time on which route, with which ports and whether the trip would take place at all. We wondered if the population would be able to repair the damage to such an extent that ships could dock in the harbors of the islands again. Above all, we didn't want to go anywhere to enjoy vacation friends where the population was fighting for survival. Tui Cruises did not reveal its cards for a long time and despite many inquiries from fellow travelers, there was no talk of a rerouting. Cancellation of the trip was no longer possible as we were within the 50-day deadline. In addition, we had been looking forward to the tour with the brand new Mein Schiff 6 for over 2 years. Seeing New York once was a long-held dream of ours.

28 days before departure, Tui Cruises decided to change the itinerary. Instead of the hurricane-damaged islands of St. Thomas, St. Maarten and Tortola, we would visit the islands of St. Kitts, Antigua and Guadeloupe. We didn't know any of the islands yet. But after we had looked at some pictures and information on the internet, it quickly became clear that there was so much to see here too that we could hardly decide on just one of the excursions.
