XX. San Juan del Sur

منتشر شده: 25.10.2016

Twentieth entry (almost) on time for my two-month Nicaragua anniversary! And this time I have exciting news to report. On the weekend, we were back in San Juan del Sur. By we, I mean Franzi & Lucy, the two German volunteers, and Emily, Jenni & Maryam, the three volunteers from Canada.

On Saturday, we got on a rickety bus again, where once again my resistance was tested because about 500 vendors passed by with delicious things - in the end, I lost and bought a pineapple soda.

In San Juan del Sur, we found a cheap hostel, relaxed a bit on the beach, and then set off in the evening to observe turtles in a nearby nature reserve. Yes, you read that right - TURTLES!!!

First, all the lights were covered with a red film so as not to disturb the turtles. Then we headed to the beach. There we were lucky enough to watch a turtle laying its eggs. Normally, there is no more time for that, so I was even more impressed by this surprise. I also felt a bit uncomfortable being in a large group of people standing around an animal that is making such a great effort. On the other hand, it's good to know that the rangers have control over the situation - they patrol the beach and collect some eggs to protect them from poachers.

Afterwards, we were able to help guide the newly hatched turtles into the water. They obediently follow the light until they are eventually caught by a wave, hopefully starting their life in the sea.

Finally, we spent some time stargazing. I saw a total of eight shooting stars - that made this experience perfect! After we returned to the hostel pretty tired, we decided to check out the nightlife - people in San Juan del Sur are completely crazy, but I already knew that.

We spent the next morning at the beach before heading back home.

Hasta luego!
