58 to Strasbourg

منتشر شده: 10.06.2023

🇬🇧 English version below

Tour data: Distance 123.6 kilometers (cum. 4,816 kilometers), Ø 19.3 km/h, travel time 6:24 hours, total ascent 1,230m

Weather: nice and hot (up to 30°), wind desired, no matter which side, mostly it came from behind

The hotel in Neustadt was located in the center and had no insulated windows, so it was noisy even with the windows closed. Nevertheless, I fell asleep while writing the blog and woke up around 11 p.m. I almost felt completely rested and could have started immediately. After I finally finished writing my blog, I fell asleep again. But when I woke up next time, I got up and took the starting photo at 06:21. It was still cool and the streets were almost empty at that time.

A man asked me if I had ridden here from Switzerland. Upon my simple yes, he said: Respect, respect! I thanked him and spared myself from telling him about my journey.

I really enjoyed this early ride. Besides the cool air, the light was also ideal for taking pictures. So I stopped more often to capture the ride through the vineyards on the German Wine Route.

Today, I also crossed some picturesque wine towns and even more vineyards. They were all full of leaves now. This is in contrast to when I started my journey and everything was bare. I also encountered vine growers who were doing their necessary work. However, I didn't see many cyclists. It was probably too frequent and too steep for them to climb the hills here. Nevertheless, I managed to reach a total elevation of over 1,200m. That's when I realized that I was no longer in Holland. After all the flat land, it was a pleasant change for me. Sometimes, both the Bosch motor and my muscles reached their limits. But the beautiful panoramic views from the heights quickly made me forget the sweat I shed.

With every kilometer I cover, I'm getting closer to home. This also means that my journey will soon come to an end. Since I have already reached Strasbourg today, I could be home as early as Monday. But I think I'll treat myself to an additional day and arrive home on Tuesday, June 13th. This will give me the opportunity to meet up with friends and take a closer look at the places on my tour.

Yesterday, I mentioned that a bicycle mechanic pumped up my suspension. Today, the air suddenly went out again, so I suspect that something is broken. I remember hitting the eBike from below when I rode down an excessively high curb. However, that was some time ago!

Markus Bossert, my bicycle dealer, advised me over the phone to get it checked or at least pumped up again. But I would have to wait until Monday and there is no guarantee of success. So I decided to ride the remaining few hundred kilometers without suspension.

I didn't really expect to reach Strasbourg today. That's why I only started looking for accommodation shortly before Strasbourg. I realized that the hotels are very expensive. I only found a nice and affordable hotel in Kehl. So I simply crossed Strasbourg and ended up back in Germany. Nonetheless, Strasbourg still counts as a goal that I have reached on my bike tour. Is that true for you as well?
