New destination: Saarburg on the Saar

Argitaratu: 27.05.2024

Departure to Saarburg, the last stop on our four-river tour. As tranquil and comfortable as it was at the camping beach club in Fahrbach, after a good week the change of scenery comes at just the right time. Since our tour leader Heinz and his wife Heidi had to unexpectedly go home for personal reasons, Jupp took over the tour, who is from Saarland and knows the area very well.

After we had to cancel the Mosel from our program because of the flooding, last week it looked as if we would have to think of an alternative for the Saar as well. "A few days ago, this campsite was also under water," says Jupp during the welcoming round at our new facility. But we were able to take our pitches in the Leukbachtal without any problems, and there was no sign of the water anymore.

On the almost 180-kilometer route - Jupp chose the slightly longer route over country roads and the Hunsrückhöhenweg, where we were able to gain a wonderful impression of this beautiful region with its wide meadows and forests. Around midday we stopped in Hermeskeil, where the Peter Junior aviation exhibition was waiting for us. Over 100 civil and military aircraft from all eras are on display on the 76,000 square meter site. The legendary MIG 21 and MIG 23 - jet fighters of the Russian Air Force - lined up next to various Starfighter types and machines from the Phantom series. The highlight was a well-preserved example of the old "Tante Ju", a three-engine passenger and transport aircraft from the German manufacturer Junkers Flugzeugwerk AG in Dessau from the 1940s.

Tomorrow, in the early afternoon, we will be visiting the Mabilon Bell Foundry Museum before we take a stroll through Saarburg to get a first impression of this little town, in the center of which we will marvel at a waterfall over 70 meters high. We are all very excited about this...
