Byron Bay - Day 3; Kayaking, Nimbin, Gold Coast

Argitaratu: 02.03.2018

Our day started relatively early after the exertion of the last two days, as kayaking began at 9:30.

This time it was different from New Zealand. We didn't need a thick rain jacket and sat in an open kayak.

Hardly on the ocean, we stopped for the first time and were able to admire a huge turtle that can live up to 200 years old. While paddling further, you could often see the green head of one of the smaller turtle species gasping for air.

In the neighboring bay, we stopped again. The frequent breaks were very good for our muscles, which were completely exhausted from surfing. :D The sun was already quite strong and so you could cool off in the clear water while we looked out for dolphins, which were at home in this bay.

Towards the end, when we paddled a little further to the easternmost point of Australia, we saw a large family of gray, large dolphins. On the way back, they accompanied us for a while. 😊

It was really a great experience, but our arms were getting pretty tired at the end, so we were happy when we were back on land.

After a quick shower on the beach, we drove an hour and a half inland to the small hippie town of Nimbin. This town of 500 inhabitants is the only place in Australia where marijuana is allowed. Our expectations were disappointed. There was a street with a few shops and nothing else. As there were also a few creepy figures around, we drove on directly after shopping in a dress shop.

We found a campsite not far from the beach on the Gold Coast. :)
