Roussillon is a popular tourist destination. The reason for this was created millions of years ago. After the sea slowly receded, iron-rich clay remained. Through chemical reactions, the very distinctive and colorful ochre was created. It was so popular that it was mined on a large scale. The ochre cliffs that can be seen today, including here in Roussillon, were left behind.
Particularly interesting is the variety of ochre tones. On the other hand, the green of the plants growing between the cliffs seemed artificial to us. But it's all real! Painters and artists especially appreciate these colors. However, the great commercial advantage is no longer given. There are now artificially produced colors that are also cheaper.
Instead, the town of Roussillon, which also seems to be immersed in ochre colors, has found another source of income: tourism.
The area is particularly interesting for day trippers and therefore very crowded! For us, the many people in one place were directly unpleasant. On the previous days of our hikes, we hardly met anyone.
Speaking of hiking: we have to confess. Contrary to our plan, we did not walk here today. It actually rained so heavily that we decided to ride with our luggage transport. So we were already in Roussillon in the morning and could wait until the weather improved in the late afternoon.
Of course, the ochre cliffs are worth a trip and an absolute highlight in the beautiful Provence.
