December 7, 2021: Girona
F. Gerona or Girona in Catalan is a charming city with a lot of history to touch and experience. The old town consists of three parts. The part built by the Romans - Kastell Gerunda - can only be guessed at, as its city wall was partially torn down and expanded by the Visigoths. The Jewish quarter that emerged from it in the Middle Ages consists of many small streets, some of which are even covered. The much longer city wall from the Middle Ages is still almost completely intact and encloses an area three times as large as the old Roman castle. In general, much of this old town area still looks medieval. So it is not surprising that the many churches with their large open stairs in front of the main entrance are often used as a backdrop in films. (e.g. Game of Thrones, Perfume)
December 7th seems to be a bridge day between the holidays for many people in Spain, between the Spanish Constitution Day and the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. The city was full of people doing Christmas shopping in the sun or enjoying a day off with their families. When I thought about taking off my jacket because the weather was good to us, I noticed that some people were already wearing gloves, scarves, and thick hats. The 15 degrees Celsius are a little too cold for locals in December. 😅
It is supposed to be really cold in Girona tonight (-2 degrees Celsius), so we decided not to spend another day in Girona - which would have been appropriate - and to drive to the coast where the night temperatures shouldn't drop that much.
Day 52 - Total Tour 4,009 km
