F. In Krujë stands the castle, from which the national hero Skanderbeg was able to hold back the advancing Ottomans for over 30 years. Only after his death in 1478 could the Turks capture Krujë and all of Albania and rule it for over 400 years. The castle did not survive the rule of the Turks, but a beautiful castle still looms over Krujë to this day. However, this is only a monumental new building from the 1970s, which was based on the old castle. The architect was the daughter of the communist leader Enver Hoxha. Just like the castle, the Bazzar is no longer completely original. It used to consist of many small streets with stalls selling a variety of goods from the surrounding area. Today you will find a long street here lined exclusively with souvenir shops. Nevertheless, everything is very beautiful to look at and definitely worth a visit.
In the castle of Krujë, since its reopening in 1982, there has been a museum dedicated to the national hero Skanderbeg. The Communists used this to build a cult of personality around Skanderbeg and interpreted him in their own way. Due to the ban on religion, he even served as a substitute for the spiritual emptiness of the population, which can still be seen today in the design and exhibition of the museum.
In the evening we drove to the Patok Lagoon, which was recommended to us by two other travelers for its beautiful sunsets. And they did not promise too much. Despite many beautiful sunsets in the past few days, this one could top them all. We enjoyed our dinner during a spectacular sunset, which we have not seen in a long time.
