'I want to see mountains again, mountains, Gandalf.'
We start the sunny day at 7:45 with our bus. We have chosen a tour with bus and cruise to not take any risks with the camper and to take a break from driving ourselves. In addition, we have won six correct lottery numbers with our very knowledgeable guide Terry. The drive in our small bus with countless stops was at least as beautiful as the drive over the sound itself. A very interesting insight into the local nature. We would have loved to do at least a part of the long Milford or Routeburn Tracks, but we will see if the weather holds.
We have also seen wildlife today: little penguins, sea lions and a close encounter with a kea.
By the way, the New Zealanders seem to invest a lot in the infrastructure for tourists here. A side gravel track will be paved until February. This tour will be very drivable with a rental camper. The harbor at Milford Sound also seems to be quite new. Despite the large number of tour operators, there were only 13 people on our boat. Very relaxing and advantageous for photos on the deck. On the sound itself, it is also not a problem to occasionally see another boat. It is not crowded here.
The Fjordland has definitely impressed us sustainably! No wonder that movies like Avatar and Lord of the Rings were filmed here.
