Today is Valentine's Day. Paraguayans take it easy. At least that's what they say. In truth, they are completely crazy about it. Yesterday at the shopping center, Meche had a mug with couple pictures made, which we could pick up today from 4:00 p.m. So what do we do until then?
Since I was interested in the Rio Paraguay, I inquired about it. There is actually the possibility to cross the river cheaply. Small ferry boats leave the port for Chaco'i, one of the poorest cities/villages in Paraguay, every 20 minutes. And only 3km as the crow flies from the white house. (which is actually pink by now)
These cute boats are used daily by commuters in all weather conditions. The crossing takes about 30 minutes and costs 3500 Guaranies (€0.50).
The engine was started manually, similar to a lawnmower, and was so loud that you were easily deaf afterwards.
Since Chaco'i doesn't have much to offer and is very poor, and therefore also dangerous, we decided to go back directly with the next boat.
Although the river is used industrially, it has never been canalized. It is completely natural.
When we arrived, we were able to stretch our legs for a short time. Apart from 3 people, there was nothing going on here.
The return trip was very sweet again. The 'captain' was a true original.
The engine was a bit quieter, but still very loud. It was cranked by hand. =D
I'm very impressed by the last picture myself. It shows the skyline of Asuncion. I especially like the clouds reflected in the water.
