Palenque - a Mayan metropolis/Palenque - a Mayan city

Argitaratu: 27.05.2017

In the middle of the jungle in Chiapas are the ruins of a once powerful Mayan dynasty. Given the size of the ruins, it's hard to believe that only a fraction has been uncovered. The rest is still buried under the jungle. The old palace and the Temple of the Inscriptions are among the most beautiful buildings in the city. In the Temple of the Inscriptions is the tomb of the most important ruler, Pakal. One can also see that the Mayans were true artists and created numerous stone sculptures. A very interesting place full of history and unsolved mysteries!

The great power reached its peak around 400 AD and by approximately 900 AD, the metropolis was abandoned for unknown reasons. It is believed that a severe drought was one of the causes for its downfall...

The modern city of Palenque is not particularly worth seeing, people mainly come here because of the ruins, which are among the most important in Mexico (there are countless ruins). Since it is unbearably hot inland at the moment, we are going back to the coast where we can at least cool down! 🌴🐠

In the middle of the Chiapas jungle are the ruins of the city where an important Mayan dynasty was established. Given the size of the ruins that can be seen today, it is difficult to believe that only about 5% of the city has been discovered, with the rest lying under the jungle. Among the buildings that attract the most attention are a palace, which housed the ruling class, and the Temple of the Inscriptions, which contains the mural of the famous Mayan astronaut (you may recognize it if you've seen the "Ancient Aliens" documentaries).

The city reached its peak around 400 AD, and by around 900 AD, the region began to depopulate for reasons that are still unknown.

Currently, the city of Palenque doesn't have much to offer, and everything here revolves around the Mayan ruins, with buses, tours, guides, etc. It's very hot here right now, so we decided to go straight to the coast in Cozumel!!
