Himba Tribe near Outjo

Argitaratu: 19.11.2016

On our way to Outjo, we stopped at an African market. The women there wear dresses with bright colors and funny hats, which were originally used as festive clothing but have now become everyday wear. Taking photos is only partially allowed, if you ask first. They sell small handmade dolls and other trinkets there.

Right after that, we went to the Himbas, where a local resident gave us a guided tour and told us about how the Himbas live. The Himbas wear very little clothing, except for the men.
Sometimes it feels like more of a show for tourists, as the men are already wearing clothing from this century, but it was still very informative. For example, they only use smoke to wash themselves because there is usually a shortage of water where they stay. In their culture, they told us, men can have up to four wives. The man only has to build a separate hut for each of his wives and must take care of all of them equally. And of course, he has to buy the woman from her father with four cows. It's all very different from us, and we were able to experience a piece of another culture again.

After that, we went straight to our camp where we had a few beers and played a fun Halloween game with the others.
