One last day in Iceland

Our last day starts off stormy and rainy but with a delicious breakfast 😀, which we enjoy thoroughly.

By noon, the rain subsides and we set off. We are on the Reykjanes Peninsula - 'The Reykjanes Peninsula is a highly active geothermal area and features gigantic lava fields, shimmering green lakes, picturesque cliffs, and a bridge that connects the continental plates of Europe and North America,' says the guidebook. And indeed, we drive through a huge lava area - everything is black and bizarre. As the first stop, we encounter bubbling hot springs, from which 100-degree hot steam rises. We also see how this gigantic heat is carried away from the earth through pipelines - for example, to Reykjavik. The city is 100% powered by geothermal energy for heating and hot water. There are even heated footpaths in Reykjavik 😀

Continuing through the lava field, we reach the bridge that leads from the Eurasian Plate to the American Plate. We are excited about the black rock and the trench between the plates. A great photo opportunity.

As a conclusion to the day and our trip to Iceland, we visit the Blue Lagoon, a thermal bath with '9 MILLION LITERS FROM THE DEPTHS OF THE EARTH - The geothermal water comes from 2000 meters below the surface, where fresh and seawater merge at extreme temperatures. It is then used in a nearby geothermal power plant to generate electricity and hot water for the surrounding communities.

On its way to the surface, the water absorbs silica and minerals. When the water emerges, its temperature is between 37°C and 40°C.

WHY IS IT BLUE?

The thermal water has a unique composition, with three active ingredients - Silica, Algae & Minerals.

The blue color comes from the silica and the way it is reflected by sunlight.'

It is super nice to walk around in this warm water - a huge bathtub that we share with people from all over the world. Our two-hour bath goes by quickly. It is a wonderful conclusion.

We drive back to the hotel, pack our suitcases, we have to get up early tomorrow. The 🛫 to Berlin starts at 6 o'clock.
