Our first flight after 2.5 years of Corona travel abstinence takes us to Western Canada. After a short stopover with Karen in Edmonton, we want to drive through the Rocky Mountain national parks for 3 weeks with a rental car. This time, our grandchildren Friederike and Clemens are on board, who have been looking forward to this trip for a long time.
The direct flight with Air Canada starts in Frankfurt and takes a little over 9 hours. Or so we thought! While driving to the airport, we received a delay notification of about 2 hours due to allegedly bad weather. It turned out to be 3.5 hours (both in Frankfurt and in Calgary the sun is shining)!
The children pass the time on board in a good mood with the in-flight entertainment and even manage to get some sleep. Masks are mandatory on the plane for everyone aged 2 and over. My prejudices in this regard were unfounded, thanks to the air conditioning everything is bearable.
In Calgary, we experience an electronically well-organized immigration control. Everything (passport control, customs declaration, and health/vaccination status) is done through numerous self-service terminals. At the border police, we only have to show our passports and the ArriveCan app briefly.
Fortunately, the corona tests are currently suspended!
It still takes us over 1 hour to pick up the reserved rental car and after a drive of almost 3 hours, we fall asleep exhausted in the hotel beds in Edmonton - while in Germany, people are already getting up.
