Highlight of the day: Surprisingly, the sun came out in the afternoon.
Last night, I saw the lights of the houses on the opposite side of the lake. This morning, when I woke up, it was cloudy and drizzling. So I put on my rain jacket and covered my backpack with its cover.
My host Camille was so helpful yesterday and got me the timetable and checked where the bus stop is. Yes, he even ran to tell me how far away the stop is. Because there is no regular schedule here. The next bus would have only gone in the afternoon.
So today I took the bus back to Evian for € 3.50 to continue my tour from where I left off yesterday. As I said before, it was going to be a short hike. I set Thonon as my destination, which should be about 12 km.
In France, hiking doesn't seem to be a popular sport. At least in this area, there are no good hiking trails or signs. Luckily, I always have a great hiking app with me called Komoot, where I can zoom in on the map to a scale of 1:25,000. Here, I let the app suggest a route and then see where there is still room for improvement in the terrain. In particular, I want to avoid steep slopes and walk as flat as possible.
Unfortunately, my wish to hike along the lake as much as possible did not come true. So once again, I had to walk on a makeshift path next to the main road or go uphill. Cumulatively, in addition to the over 12 km, I also had to climb 170 meters in elevation.
Thonon apparently also has a spring, but it is certainly not as well known as the one in Evian. Do they just have better marketing? Because the location is equally good in both places and both cities are worth seeing. Why not spend a vacation here once?
Since I arrived at my destination too early despite a long lunch break at a restaurant by the harbor, I spent the waiting time taking a short city tour and visiting the remarkable basilica.
