Working at Workaway

I would like to describe my experiences with the work here at this Workaway position and visualize them with pictures. Here you can see the pictures. In the first few days, I realized that working with olive trees is physically exhausting and makes you want to fall into bed after work. Yes, I know 5 hours of work per day is not much, but if you are not used to such work.... perfectly understandable 😊.

What are my tasks?

Generally speaking, I am a support for my Workaway host. I do pretty much everything that helps him with his work. He often gives me tasks that I try to accomplish. Sometimes we work together on a task, other times I work on my own.

In the first week, we were busy planting small olive trees and securing them on the field in the mountains.

Planting olive trees is hard work, as the soil in Andalusia is often very hard and you always have to dig a hole before planting. We used the following tools to "dig" the holes.

The owner has several fields that are located up to 15 km away. He has an olive field right around his house, and the others are in the mountains.

Another task for me this week was to burn old branches from the olive trees in a large fire and protect small olive trees from the sun and animals by building small fences or "tipis".

On the last workday before the weekend, we (volunteers) had the task of planting olive trees in flower pots, as these trees have not yet been planted in the field.
