Alesund - the Art Nouveau town

Early in the morning I left Volda to get to Alesund. After finally finding a parking space, I walked up the 189 m high mountain Aksla with exactly 418 steps (one way). There was a crowd on the stairs and also at the viewpoint, so I quickly went back down.

Then I explored the city and the harbor. I took a little break at the lighthouse.

Alesund is also known as the Art Nouveau town. To understand that, you have to know the history of the city. In 1904 there was a big fire that destroyed more than 800 wooden houses, almost the entire city center. Kaiser Wilhelm II, a great lover of Norway, supported the reconstruction (this time with stone and in the then modern Art Nouveau style) with generous donations.

The city was quickly visited, so in the afternoon I wanted to visit the aquarium. But what I didn't know was that you have to buy the tickets online. When I tried to do that on site, several days were already sold out. When I wanted to park at the aquarium, I was asked because of my German license plate whether I had already been in quarantine, which I found a little strange. Since I couldn't go to the aquarium now, I went for a walk and found several bunkers and shooting facilities from the Second World War, as is often the case. 

On the way back I picked blueberries, which I later ate when I found my place for the night.
