South-West-Australia - Kangaroos for dinner, dolphins and pelicans for a picnic

Argitaratu: 19.02.2018

9th to 13th of Feb: We continue our planned tour along the coast to the south. With a child on crutches, everything is a bit slower. But we make the best of it. Fa has no more pain and is in a good mood. We visit small coastal towns like Busselton with the longest jetty in Australia, one kilometer long. In Margret River, we see the first (wild) kangaroos in the forest and are delighted like little children. Fa and I go shopping in the stylish Margret River and I buy new flip flops because mine broke the previous evening. And a vacation without flip flops is simply unthinkable.

When we arrive in Augusta, a picnic is planned. It spontaneously turns into two days when we see dolphins right in front of us on the sandbank. This beautiful bay alone is breathtakingly beautiful and with the dolphins it is simply picturesque. Bo tries several times during this time to swim with the dolphins, but my daughter sums it up perfectly: 'he just can't do it'. The dolphins are very shy.

In the afternoon, small fishing boats return and we watch the fishermen gut the fish. Three large rays and many pelicans join us and speculate on fish scraps. We sit in the afternoon sun and watch the colorful activity. The rays have the treats shoved into their mouths, while the pelicans fight over every bite.

We spend one night further inland at a wild campsite. Surprisingly, this turns out to be a stroke of luck for kangaroos. On the way there, we see many kangaroos sunning themselves in the twilight. A great atmosphere. The next morning, we drive back to that spot and have breakfast there. But there are only a few kangaroos compared to the previous evening... hardly any kangaroos for breakfast, but we have pancakes.
