Catlins
Curio Bay
Hello,
On our way from Invercargill to Dunedin, we made many stops and saw everything there was to see. We stayed overnight in Curio Bay and Owaka.
Daniel made a quick stop at the Wetlands. The Wetlands are actually nothing more than a lagoon with a beautiful landscape. Daniel checked it out and took pictures while I slept. It was so incredibly hot and I was so tired...
Next, we drove to a beach to see a stranded ship. However, this can only be done at low tide. Luckily, we were able to see the upper part of the wreck. Then we drove 5 minutes further and wanted to see colored cliffs. The colors could be seen, but unfortunately they were not as clearly visible as they appear in other pictures.
The next stop was at a beautiful lighthouse right next to the sea. We could also see seals there.
Our plan was actually to stay one night at Slope Point, the southernmost point of New Zealand's mainland. Unfortunately, the road there was closed. So we had to keep driving. Our next stop was Curio Bay. The campground is right by the sea. You can take a surfing course there and if you're lucky, the dolphins that live there will accompany you while you surf. That must be beautiful. We were also able to watch some dolphins from the beach.
After spending a night at a really not so great campground, we drove to Owaka. Owaka is a nice little village. We saw a beautiful garden with collected teapots :D it looked very fascinating and it's free :D You can just park by the road and walk into the garden. When we arrived at the campground, we immediately booked 2 nights so we could do some laundry and have a little rest. It's nice to take a break from driving sometimes. We also met many Germans. A different couple every day. After the first day, we immediately booked 2 more nights, so a total of 4 nights. We collected seashells and played "Settlers of Catan" with one of the German couples and even went spearfishing with them. One day we drove to a nearby bay to see seals and sea lions. It was breathtaking. They were very close to us and we were able to take good photos of them. The days were very nice but also went by very quickly.... the next route was from Owaka to Dunedin
