On May 28, we had to wake up at 4:30 am because at 5 am we headed towards the Rainbow Mountains. The almost 4-hour drive there gave us another interesting insight into Peruvian agriculture: Potatoes are still grown following the Inca tradition. Terraces are arranged along the entire width and height of the mountain slopes, the work is done completely manually, and a terrace change is made after each harvest.
At 9 am, it was time. At an altitude of 4300m, we got off to conquer the last 700 meters of altitude. 9 tourists got off, 6 reached the top. The path was only manageable if you walked very, very slowly or were accustomed to the altitude.
It was very impressive!!!!
Due to the folding of the mountain, various minerals are pushed to the surface, resulting in colored stripes.
No sounds could be heard except for our own breathing (panting), the steps, and... the wind. The 6 of us (+ guide) were the only ones on the mountain so early in the morning. We had an unobstructed view of one of the highest mountains in Peru (6400m).
The next day, we flew to Puerto Maldonado, into the Amazon region.
