Day 7 Split

Avaldatud: 12.08.2018

Today, the second city trip was on the program. After 9 years, we were going to the 'capital of Dalmatia' again, so the anticipation of a reunion was great. In my humble opinion, Split with its 167,000 inhabitants on the Adriatic Sea is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe.

From Kastel Kambelovac to the center, only 25 minutes were shown in the navigation system, but finding a parking space for the car was much more time-consuming. Split was crowded on this Wednesday. In the area of the ferry port, the traffic came to a standstill and the few available parking spaces were all occupied. At least we could see that the drivers were much more relaxed and considerate than, for example, in Italy. We left the center and finally found a parking space outside the stadium of RNK Split. From there, we walked for about 20 minutes to the historic center. Already in the morning, the sun burned mercilessly from the cloudless sky, and we quickly realized that it wouldn't be so easy today.

Despite the high season, the tourist crowds were fortunately limited, and we could still move around in the streets of the old town, or we could maneuver through them with the stroller.

The origins of the city can be traced back to the Diocletian's Palace. The city center, along with the palace, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. It is located on the south coast of the Split Peninsula and consists essentially of the palace, from which the city developed, and the medieval expansion to the west. The composition of the old walls is absolutely worth seeing, and there was at least some shade in the protection of the houses. Below the old town is the Riva, an elongated promenade covered with palm trees.

Due to the high temperatures, our excursion only allowed for a walk through the old town, a stroll along the Riva, and a short detour to the ferry port and the fish market. At the latter point, the smell of fish was so extreme that we could only stand it there for a short time. The trip was rounded off with a portion of Cevapi before we went back to the car, all sweaty, and returned to Kastela.
